Chawan, Geppaku , Hosai XVI

This summer we had a joint exhibition with Mr Masahiro Nakagawa, an artist of yuzen, through the connection of Mr Hosoo of Nishijin weaving. I visited Mr. Nakagawa's studio and learned about his techniques, which inspired me to create this tea bowl. Weir de yuzen is a technique of dyeing while stopping with glue, and Mr Nakagawa's work is impressive for the beauty of the lines that can only be achieved by stopping with glue.\n\nThe same technique of stopping the glaze with wax or chemicals also exists in ceramics. The technique was used in some of the checkerboard pieces. In my Geppaku overglazed work, I do not use a stopping technique as I value the natural momentum and beauty of the landscape created by using a bamboo ladle to literally pour and hang the glaze. If I try to control it by stopping the flow, it becomes unnatural.\nIn this work, however, I tried to create a different kind of harmony by combining the technique of stopping with the technique of letting the lines flow naturally, creating a mixture of natural and slightly uncomfortable lines.\nThe result is an interesting tea bowl with a striking line in the center, which, together with the glaze dripping during firing, creates a harmonious combination of naturalness and discomfort.
